Welcome new friends and thank you for visiting!

*** Update since opening the giveaway***

The comment question for an added entry point is: What is your most challenging fit issue. I am so intrigued by all of the answers listed. There are issues and concerns that I have never considered. With such a small sample size it is amazing to see the varied responses. Thanks for sharing and educating me and others.

I made my dress form, B.I.R.A (my Body Image Realignment Aid), because I lost 30 lbs (dietary changes and losing baby weight) and did not know my body anymore. I was still sewing for my old body which had gone through so many changes in the year post delivery. Nothing fit correctly and it took a great deal of time to correct the fit problems in the garments I made.  I needed to stop wasting time and money on garments that did not fit. Since making B.I.R.A my sewing has improved, became more efficient, and gotten more adventurous. Many comments I have received on Pattern Review have referred to the impeccable fit I get in my garments. I own it all to my form.

For those of you with arm and sleeve concerns. The instructions advise against going any lower than the length pictured. Any longer poses a problem when fitting garments with no closures. You may want to make an additional form that is a half torso from center front with a longer arm.

I believe the other issues can be addressed with a Custom Dress Form.

Good Luck in the giveaway!

  1. I am very sensitive about how sleeves fit -- I have to fuss with most patterns.

  2. Getting something to fit properly on my hips is a challenge. Thansk for the chance.

  3. Sleeves and bust are always a challenge for me....and a bit of a round belly from having four babies!

  4. Having gained weight around my middle I don't instinctively know what looks good on me anymore, so I tend to sew for my "pre-belly" shape. sarah@forrussia.org

  5. My upper arms. I do not wear sleeveless tops or dresses and many patterns only come that way.

  6. gained weight so its hard to find a good fit

  7. My bust!!! It always requires an FBA but then I manage to screw up my shoulders...aargh!

  8. My biggest fit challenge - my bust!

  9. I quit smoking and gained about 30 lbs. :( I have no idea how to handle this extra weight.

  10. I have a large bust and narrow shoulders so all form fitting pattern styles need to be adjusted.

  11. My biggest fit challenge is that I am different sizes depending on the part of my body!

  12. I'm new to sewing and intimidated by apparel, so all of the fitting is a challenge.

  13. Lovely pattern, I always struggle with dress patterns, I have a large bust and very narrow hips and a middle that is growing due to age - well that's what I'm saying and I'm sticking with it.
Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  14. THE BACK! i have pretty severe scoliosis, one hip is at least a full inch higher than the other. so even a swayback adjustment can't make the back lie flat. i'm pretty new to garment-sewing, so i have yet to figure how to address this, & it's not exactly a common problem with tons of tutorials addressing it.

  15. All fitting issues! Mainly for the waist/hip area since I am so boxy.

  16. Wow that is so cool - i was looking at the prices for a form and they were so expensive. What a cool idea - when you are endowed with extra in the upstairs drawer department it is so hard to get something that fits well.

  17. My fitting challenge would have to be that I'm short waisted. I also believe that I have swayback issues, but I'm still a newbie and unclear about to fix those fit issues when making garments.

  18. I am not sure if a form would work or not to fix this problem, but I have a big butt, "and I can not lie", and my little girl inherited it and she rips her bum seams all of the time, guess little girls aren't supposed to have big bums.

  19. I'm taking patternmaking classes and my next step is to do my own dressform. My vintage adjustable one just doesn't cut it.

  20. I apparently have a very long butt, and combined with my lovely wide hips, it makes for interesting sewing! I would love something that fits my shape, so I don't have to constantly drop down to my underwear fifty times during a sewing project!

  21. I have a hard time getting sleeves to look nice and allow me to move as much as I'd like.

  22. I'm all torso. At 5'9" that's a lot of torso. Additionally, I have a broad rib-cage and shoulder but small bust so I am often sewing larger sizes that are too blousey in the front.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am quite busty for my size and I recently have lost 65 pounds so I have no idea what size to make and have lots of fit issues.

  24. No bust and extra but. Great giveaway. Thanks so much for sharing.

  25. Keeping everything short enough for my height but still fit around my belly

  26. tummy/hip area is always hardest for me.

  27. My stomach/hip area. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  28. I think I have altered every pattern I've ever sewn! Different issues with various stages of life...but have found, I don't think they 'use' 'real' people when creating measurements for patterns. The most difficult fitting issue for me is marking my hem!

  29. My stomach. I'm small mostly everywhere but there. Too many beers, I guess!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have a small chest and have a hard time adapting patterns to it. Thanks!

  31. My posr pregnancy belly and my reduced chest! Thanks for a chance to win.

  32. With a curved spine and a dropped shoulder; with an above average bust size; and with the bodily changes that age brings, I haven't sewn for myself for years and years. I'll gladly sew for someone else because I can fit them. A friend and I used to make dress forms, but mine no longer resembles me, so I'd love to have your instructions for making a new one.

  33. Making a form is a great idea! My hips are the hardest to fit. I'm definitely a pear shape so getting the waist/hip area to fit is tricky.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have narrow shoulders and rib cage, a high bust, short waist, hips too big for my waist, and relatively long arms and legs. I also have uneven hips and shoulders (I supposedly have a little scoliosis), which means that nothing sits right (i.e. skirts hang unevenly). (I also have tiny hands; don't get me started on how the only glove and mitten patterns (knitting) that I can find in my size are children's patterns!)

I hadn't realized how long that list was until I wrote it out! I don't think I ever have clothes that really fit me and I guess I'm kind of used to it.

  35. I have VERY long arms and legs, very wide shoulders, and a long waist...so finding/making clothes that fit is a constant struggle. A custom dress form is such a great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Definitely where to place additional darts or playing around with existing ones for better fit!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I always seem to have a gap at the back neckline!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am short and I have very large upper arms. Bought cotton shirts never fit on my arms.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My biggest fit challenge is my middle, I have an inner tube around my belly!!! I am ready to learn pattern drafting and this would be the last tool I need to acquire to draft some custom fit patterns for myself!

    Thanx for the give away!

  40. I haven't made clothing yet (I'm a quilter), although it is high on my list of things I would like to learn! I think a dress form might give me more confidence in venturing into that arena.

  41. My biggest fit challenge for myself is to find something that fits my body type--smaller waist, hips and a round booty. Just about everything in stores doesn't fit good. If it fits my booty and thighs, it gapes in the waist. Something that is my waist size is too small for my legs and booty.
